Suddenly, there in the synagogue, a person with an evil spirit screamed, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are. You are the holy one from God.” “Silence!” Jesus said, speaking harshly to the demon. “Come out of him!” The unclean spirit shook him and screamed, then it came out.
In the Gospel of Mark this is the very first exorcism Jesus performs. Actually, it is the first miracle that is detailed at all in the Gospel. What I find interesting about this is where the exorcism happens.
At the synagogue.
The demon-possessed person was in the midst of the religious fellowship. He was among the covenant people of God. This is a good warning to us. Evil is not relegated to bad places. It can penetrate even the good places of the world.
Of course equally important to remember is that the demon had absolutely no power once Jesus arrived. The evil was there, but it had to obey Christ. Evil may infiltrate the fellowship of the people of God, but it will only have power if we allow it to have power. Do not be fearful, but be careful.
